Born 1850. Died 1913 - English seismologist.

Educated at Royal School of Mines, London. Began career as mining engineer. Travelled extensively in Newfoundland, Egypt, Arabia, Siberia and Mongolia. While in Japan began study of earthquakes. Pioneered modern seismology, developed a seismometer to record ground motion. Published Earthquakes and other Earth Movements (1886) and Seismology (1898).
