Yates started his career as a child actor, with appearances in Desmond’s and Grange Hill to his credit, though even at that time he dipped a toe into presenting. He is probably best known for his work on Top of the Pops, and on Radio 1, particularly for his collaborations with Fearne Cotton (with whom he had worked on Sunday morning kids’ programme Smile previously). Since that period he has appeared in innumerable TV programmes, most of them less than memorable, but with occasional gems like Extreme Russia.
