Set up building business in 1868 in the Hamilton area. Won crucial contract to build Singer’s factory at Kilbowie. Made use of new building techniques including use of concrete and labour saving machinery. Won large contracts including building Wembley Stadium. Created baronet in 1918.

not many people know that sir roberts son built the dorchester hotel during the second world war
