Worked on improving textile machinery, invented the wool-comber in 1845. Developed machine to spin waste silk, making him a fortune. Other inventions included a swivel shuttle, a velvet loom and a compressed air brake for railways. Generous benefactor, presented Bradford with Lister Park.
