Worked in family hotel business before turning to acting. Produced and appeared in Don Juan in Hell and Major Barbara, gave many renowned Shakespearian performances. Began to act in films in 1932. Appearances included The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), received Academy Award. Became a US citizen in 1950.
