Soper was an exceptional character, a gifted sportsman in his youth, a scholar, and a devout Methodist who vigorously espoused many radical causes. He gained fame for his frequent open air preaching, at Speakers’ Corner and Tower Hill. He was a teetotaller, a passionate supporter of the anti-nuclear movement, and a friend to the dispossessed. Ennobled by the Labour Government in 1965 he enraged Tories by pointing out the anti-Christian nature of various Thatcherite policies.
