Agnes Maude Royden, always known as Maude, studied at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, before undertaking social work (as part of the settlement movement) and lecturing in English Literature. She became a prominent member of the suffragette movement too but she is of particular note for her work in the Church of England, famously advocating that it no longer be merely the Conservative Party at prayer, becoming the first woman DD, and starting the campaign for the ordination of women.
