Carol Reed worked as an actor, stage manager, assistant to Edgar Wallace, and in various relatively junior roles in film making before he got his break as a director. His quality was seen with Midshipman Easy, the first feature he handled. His most famous films were The Way Ahead, The Third Man, and Oliver!, Reed winning an Oscar for the latter. He was knighted in 1953 for his services to cinema, only the second British director to be honoured thus.
