It was through his youthful fascination with birdlife that Max Nicholson became a pioneering environmentalist, his observations about bird species and their conservation informing his early work in that field. Nicholson was instrumental in the foundation of many nationally and internationally important bodies including The British Trust for Ornithology, The International Institute for Environment and Development, and what became the WWF and the Policy Studies Institute.
