Miall, a Congregational minister, was a major figure in the disestablishment cause who founded the weekly Nonconformist newspaper, co-founded what became known as The Liberation Society, and worked to gain political representation for that cause in Parliament, himself becoming Liberal MP for Rochdale between 1852 and 1857, then for Bradford between 1860 and 1874.
