Maudsley was educated at Giggleswick School and UCL, where he was something of a star student in his medical studies. Instead of the career in surgery he had first considered Maudsley became a psychiatric specialist, serving in several asylums public and private. He later went into private practice, and was a well-regarded writer on mental health and related issues. An agnostic, he also wrote critically of religion and other supernatural beliefs.
