Lilian Alicia Marks became Alicia Markova to fit into a ballet world then dominated by the Russians. She joined Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo aged just 14, having been talent spotted in her London class by the great man. After his death she returned to London and was thenceforth instrumental in the rise of the English ballet scene, dancing with the Ballet Club, a founder of the Vic-Wells Ballet, and collaborating with Anton Dolin. She was recognized as a prima ballerina assoluta, with Fonteyn the only other Englishwoman to be so honoured.
