Born 1838. Died 1905 - English actor.

First appearance at Sunderland Theatre in 1856. His Hamlet (1874), Macbeth (1875) and Othello (1876) gained him reputation as greatest actor of time. In 1878 began his famous theatrical partnership with Ellen Terry. In 1895 was first actor to gain a knighthood. Ashes buried in Westminster Abbey.
