Trained as a painter, won scholarship to study at RADA. Film debut in The Wild and the Willing (1962), stage debut in The Infanticide in the House of Fred Ginger (1962). Notable film works include A Man for all Seasons (1966), Midnight Express (1978) and The Elephant Man (1980). Portrayed Quentin Crisp in television play The Naked Civil Servant (1974).
