After a very brief career as a clerk in his native Liverpool Le Gallienne devoted himself to writing, publishing his first book when just 21. He worked for a time as a journalist in London, subsequently spending lengthy periods of his life in New York, Paris, and eventually Menton and Monaco. A poet as well as a prolific writer of biographical and critical works, and of essays and memoirs, Le Gallienne also translated works by several other writers.
