Educated at United Services College, Westward Ho! Returned to India, worked as journalist. Satirical verses and short stories earned him reputation in England. Returned to England followed by short residence in USA. Wrote successful Barrack Room Ballads (1892) and The Seven Seas (1896). The two Jungle Books earned place among classic animal stories. Nobel Prize for literature in 1907.
