BOOK KENNINGTON HOTELS

Harry H Johnston
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Kennington, London
Born on 12th of June 1858
Died on 31st of August 1927

Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston’s life story reads like the archetype of a British adventure hero from a book of gung-ho Empire era fiction (writing such stuff was a craft he actually took to, though with less success than his other ventures). He trained as an artist, and as part of that vocation travelled to Africa where he won a reputation as an explorer, linguist, botanist, negotiator and organiser, a significant figure in the late 19th century ‘Scramble for Africa.’ Naturally he also had magnificent moustaches.
