Sir Harold Jeffreys was a scientific polymath whose work included geophysics (he was reader in that subject at Cambridge for 15 years, one major idea of his in that field being that the earth’s core is liquid), the study of earthquakes, meteorology, mathematics (including work on probability theory) and astrophysics, where he theorised that Mercury may have been an escaped satellite of Venus.
