Published her first novel The Enclosure (1961) while still a student at King’s College, London. Subsequent novels include Gentleman and Ladies (1969), In the Springtime of the Year (1974) and Mrs de Winter (1993). The Woman in Black (1983) was adapted into a West End stage play. Also writes plays, short stories and books for children.
