Influenced by the theologian, anglican priest and social reformer Frederick Denison Maurice. Campaigned for the development of social housing, including Council housing. Founded the Charity Organisation Society in 1869. Created the Army Cadet Force in 1859. Advocated for the availability of open spaces for poor people, she co-founded the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty in1895.
