Born 1778. Died 1830 - English essayist.

Sent to London to study for the ministry but turned to painting and writing. Wrote essays on literary criticism and other subjects, often called the greatest English literary critic after Samuel Johnson. His best-known work is The Spirit of the Age (1825), a collection of portraits of his contemporaries. Died in poverty and is buried in St. Anne’s Churchyard, Soho, London.
