Born 1732. Died 1818 - English colonial administrator.

Joined the British East India Company in 1750 as a clerk. Made governor of Bengal in 1772. Appointed the first Governor-General of India (1773-85). Impeached in 1787 for corruption, acquitted in 1795. Spent most of his fortune on the trial, given generous financial support by the East India Company in his later years.
