Studied law at University College London. Appointed as a High Court judge in 1979, promoted to Lord Justice of Appeal in 1986 and became a Law Lord in 1992. Created a life peer as Baron Woolf of Barnes. Became Lord Chief Justice in 2000, retiring in 2005.
