Elected as Labour Party MP for Glasgow Hillhead and Glasgow Kelvin. Expelled from the Labour Party in 2003 for statements made against the invasion of Iraq. Founder member of Respect, a left wing group, and became Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow in 2005. Took part in Celebrity Big Brother in 2006.
