Educated at Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1883. Established his reputation through successfully defending a number of murderers including Robert Wood and Harold Greenwood. A notable failure was George Joseph Smith who drowned his three brides in the bath. Had two periods as an MP for Southport (1900-06) and for Toxteth (1910-16).
