Educated at Oxford University. Elected to Parliament in 1818. An advocate of the Reform Bill. Became First Lord of the Admiralty in 1830 resigning over the Irish Church question. Became Home Secretary in 1841, resigned in 1846. Became leader of the Peelites in 1850 on the death of Robert Peel. An enquiry into the conduct of the Crimean War led to his withdrawal from official life.
