Born in Downing Street where he father was living as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Educated at University College, Oxford. Was Liberal MP for Leeds (1880-1910). Was Home Secretary (1905-10) when he was the first Governor General of the Union of South Africa. Created Viscount Gladstone in 1910. Died at his home in Ware and was buried in the town's Little Munden Church.
