Born 1812. Died 1849 - Scottish botanist and explorer.
Studied medicine before becoming a botanist. Took part in expeditions to Brazil resulting in collections for the Botanic Gardens at Kew. Published Travels in the Interior of Brazil (1846). Became director of the botanical garden at Peradeniya in Ceylon.
