Born 1917 - English politician.
After serving with the Royal Engineers and attaining rank of major, he became MP for Leeds in 1952. During the Wilson government he was Secretary of State for Defence (1964-1970), and later had a stormy time as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1974-79). He unsuccessfully contested the Labour leadership twice but was, however, elected Deputy Leader (1980). He became life peer in 1992.

My interview with Denis Healey, my uncle, in Rare Book Review in 2007 might be of interest . In it he reveals details of his lifelong passion for book collecting ( he has 16,000 volumes ) and furnishes some amusing and fascinating anecdotes.
