Known as The Leamington Boxer. Turned professional in 1946. Won the European championship before defeating Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951 to become world middleweight champion. Retired in 1962 with a record of 66 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw. Committed suicide in 1966 by shooting himself.
