Son of Ellen Terry and architect William Godwin. Acted for 8 years then retired. Interest in theatrical design aiming to emphasis actors and make scenery simpler. Settled in Italy (1906). Founded theatrical school in Florence. Greatly influenced scenic design in Europe and USA.
