Served with Royal Marines during WWII. Gained acting experience with Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop. Best known as rag and bone man, Harold Steptoe, in Steptoe and Son (1962-74). Also starred in sitcoms Mr Aitch (1967) and Grundy (1980).
