Middle distance runner winning the Manchester Mile in 1949. Entered journalism joining the BBC in 1959. Has covered World Cup finals since 1958 and Olympic Games since 1960. Hosted the television quiz programme A Question of Sport from 1979 to 1997. Awarded OBE in 1992.
