Born 1775. Died 1860 - Scottish naval commander.


Served with distinction in Royal Navy during Napoleonic Wars, wrongly jailed for fraud, stripped of his naval rank and parliamentary seat. Went on to command the Chilean, Brazilian and Greek navies, helping these countries in their fight for independence. Received a Royal pardon and the restoration of his naval rank. One of Britain’s greatest seamen. Buried in Westminster Abbey.
