Educated at Trinity College and Queen’s College, Cambridge. Appointed to Bengal Educational Department in 1865. Explorations included East Bengal, Punjab Himalayas, Kashmir,Karakoram, Sikkim and Assam. Worked on collections which numbered 25,000 at Kew.
