Older brother of Robert Chambers. Wrote Book of Scotland and with his brother, Gazetteer of Scotland. Started Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal. Founded W & R Chambers. Founded and endowed a museum, library and art gallery in Peebles. Promoted improvements to older part of the city. Carried out restoration of St Giles’ Cathedral.
