Born 1726. Died 1814 - English musicologist.
Studied music in Shrewsbury, Chester and London. Travelled in France, Germany, Italy and Austria researching for Present State of Music in France and Italy (1771) and General History of Music (1776-89). Bias towards Italian style of music and neglect of Bach and his contemporaries reduced his influence.
