Blind from birth. Joined Labour Party at age of 16. Studied politics at Sheffield University. MP for Sheffield since 1987, entered Shadow Cabinet as spokesman for health (1992-94). With Labour’s victory in 1997 became Secretary of State for Education and Employment. Became Home Secretary in 2001 but resigned in 2004 after scandal over fast-tracking of visa application for nanny of ex-lover.
