Made his name on television in Z Cars. Appeared in films Flash Gordon (1980), Henry V (1989), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and The Phantom Menace (1999). In 1990 for BBC documentary climbed Everest without oxygen to 25,400 feet. Oldest man to reach magnetic north pole on foot.
