Born 1753. Died 1832 - Scottish educationist, founder of the Madras System of education.


He went to India in 1787 and in 1789 became superintendent of the Madras military orphanage. He taught with the aid of the pupils themselves by introducing the monitorial system. In 1803 Joseph Lancaster also recommended the monitorial system, his schools spreading rapidly across the UK, and in 1811 the National Society for the Education of the Poor was founded, of which Bell became superintendent.
