Along with his brother John, attended Kelso Grammar School with Sir Walter Scott. In 1797 James started the Tory Kelso Mail, and in 1802 produced the first two volumes of the Border Minstrelsy. In 1805 Scott became a secret partner in the business and in 1808 it expanded to the printing, publishing and bookselling firm of John Ballantyne & Co.
