Born 1810. Died 1900 - English inventor and industrialist.


An English inventor and industrialist, in 1840 he produced a much improved hydraulic engine, in 1842 an apparatus for producing electricity from steam, and in 1845 the hydraulic crane. In 1847 he founded the Elswick Engine Works in Newcastle to produce hydraulic machinery, cranes and bridges, and then later artillery, notably the Armstrong breech-loading gun.
