An English stage director, he worked at the Bristol Old Vic (1971-73) and the Royal Court Theatre, London before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977. He directed new plays such as Howard Barker’s The Hang of the Gaol (1978) and Country Dancing (1986). Many Shakespearean productions include Richard III (1984), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1986), The Merchant of Venice (1987) and Much Ado About Nothing (1990).
