Studied at Manchester University, taught mathematics. Became Chairman of Lewis’s store in Manchester in 1935. During WWII had responsibility of making sure the nation was well nourished. Became Chairman of Conservative Party in 1946, credited with reorganising the Party which led to victory in 1951.
