Joined Old Vic in 1954. West End debut in Camino Real (1957). Acclaimed for performance in James Joyces’s Exiles in London (1970). Joined Royal Shakespeare Company and established himself as classical actor, title roles in Richard III and King Lear. Films include The Madness of King George and Richard III.
