Born 1950 - English novelist, biographer and journalist.


Educated at Rugby and Oxford. First novel was The Sweets of Pimlico (1977). Later works include A Bottle in the Smoke (1989) and A Watch in the Dark (1996). Has written biographies on Sir Walter Scott, Milton, Tolstoy and Jesus. Literary editor of the Evening Standard from 1990-1997.
