Educated both in France and England. Influenced by Victor Hugo. First success was the drama Atalanta in Calydon (1865) but series of Poems and Ballads (1866) led to greater success. Expressed fervent republicanism in much of his work. Contributed to criticism through his Essays and Studies (1875) and Studies in Prose and Poetry (1894). Lived in semi-seclusion for much of life.
