Friday 21st August 2009 Black Country on the map at last
For the first time in history the Black Country has been put on the
Ordance Survey Landranger maps. The latest edition of OS Landranger
Map 139 clearly shows the region marked as ‘The Black Country’.
Indeed, even the map itself has been re-titled as “Birmingham and
Wolverhampton including the Black Country”.

The move comes after an intensive campaign by the Black Country
Chamber of Commerce to get the region on the map. An official
presentation of the new map will take place at the Black Country
Chamber of Commerce’s Exhibition and Awards in September. The area is
thought to have got it’s name from the seam of coal that rises to the
surface in the region. West Midlands
