Haydock is to be found on the North Wets of England conveniently located between Manchester and Liverpool just off the East Lancashire Road and the M6. Haydock built its wealth on its excellent communication links and King Coal – the Industrial Revolution brought demands for coal from many industries and whilst originally the early mines were drift mines it soon became apparent that greater amounts of coal could be excavated, soon the landscape was pockmarked with mines. These shallow mines were often excqavated close to each other and it wasn’t until the steam engine became familiar that deeper mines became viable as they were able to pump out water from the mines, supply ventilation and transport coal and miners up and down the pit. The success of the pits continued through until the late 20th century when mining ceased in the area. Today Haydock is famed for its horse racing at its world renowned racecourse, but it gained the right to the race course by default. Originally local horse racing was undertaken at the Newton Racecourse in nearby Newton le Willows, however the a new lease on 127 acres of parkland was taken up by Lord Newton and in 1899 the first race took place at Haydock. Today the original Newton course is still remembered at Haydock when the Old Newton Cup race is run
