Events in St Mary | 10 Places to Stay
The parish of St Mary lies in the North west of the Island of Jersey. It borders four other parishes, St Lawrence, St Ouen, St Peter and St John. The parish is likely to have got its name from a mediaeval monastery, which was thought to have been destroyed by Viking raiders between the 8th and 10th centuries.
One of the attractions in the parish is the 'Devil's Hole', a natural blowhole in the cliffs of the St Mary's coast. The Devil's Hole was once accessible to tourists but has been closed off for several decades now due to safety reasons. In 1851, following a shipwreck, the ship's figurehead (depicting the devil) was placed above the entrance to the hole.
Running down the boundary between Saint Mary and Saint John is the Mourier Valley. The stream formerly powered a number of mills, despite the relatively small population of the area. Pistol shooting enthusiasts will find that Crabbé is the location for them.
Amongst the many popular hotels in the area is the Westview Hotel, with ensuite rooms and outdoor swimming pool. The hotel is ideally situated for access to the fine walks on the north coast of the island.
